Sri S.G. Balekundri was a distinguished civil engineer renowned for his significant contributions to infrastructure development in India, particularly in Karnataka. His work spanned critical projects in irrigation, water supply, and power generation, playing a vital role in the region's progress. Notable projects include the Hidakal Dam, 'Naveela Teertha' Malaprabha Dam, and 'Basavasagar' Narayanapur Dam, which greatly benefited agricultural irrigation and water management. In the realm of power generation, he contributed to the Kali Hydropower Project in Dandeli, the Varahi Hydroelectric Power Project, and the Raichur Thermal Power Plant, enhancing the state's energy infrastructure.

Balekundri was also instrumental in establishing the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) in Belagavi, Karnataka. In recognition of his contributions, the central library of VTU was named the Sri S.G. Balekundri Central Library and Information Center in 2017. His legacy endures through the infrastructure he developed and the educational advancements at VTU, continuing to inspire future generations of engineers and scholars.
